Located in Afikpo in Ebonyi State, the Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic was initially known as the Federal Polytechnic, Unwana – Afikpo when it was established in 1979.

The Polytechnic’s first set of students were not enrolled until 1982 when 178 students were admitted for courses in Business Administration and Management, Secretarial studies, Electrical/Electronics

Engineering Technology and Mechanical Engineering Technology. The College was officially opened during the matriculation ceremony of these students.

Over the years, the institution has grown to include courses like Accountancy, Civil Engineering Technology and Science Laboratory Technology Departments.

Computer Science, Pre ND Science, Food Technology, Ceramic Technology, Hospitality and Tourism Management, Building Technology, Quantity Surveying, Estate Management, Surveying and

GeoInformatics Technology, Architectural Technology, Mathematics/Statistics, Agricultural Technology, Public Administration, Marketing and Pre ND Business Studies.

Auchi Polytechnic is another Federal Polytechnic. The institution is located in Auchi in Edo State. The Polytechnic was one of the first 4 Polytechnics that were created in the country.

One of the objectives of the Polytechnic is to adequately prepare their students for life the after school as a result; entrepreneural courses have been introduced in all the programmes offered in the institution.

Auchi Polytechnic - Wikipedia


Established in January 1977 in Jos, the Federal Polytechnic, Ado Ekiti was moved to Akure in 1978 by the Federal Government as a way of maintaining a uniform spread of Federal Government Institutions
among the states of the Federation.

The Polytechnic was eventually relocated to its final abode in Ado-Ekiti in 1982.

The school was initially a College of Technology but by 1979 it had been converted to a full-fledged Polytechnic.

The pioneer students at the Polytechnic were 350. However, the number has since grown to over 10,000 students enrolled in both full-time and part-time National Diploma courses as well as certificate and professional programmes.

Ekiti: Ado Poly Awards 63 Outstanding Students


Located in Bali in Taraba State, this Federal Government Polytechnic was recently established in March 2007.

Following the decision to establish this educational institution, the Taraba State Government and the Bali Local Government Authority donated some facilities and structures to the college.

This included a 500 hectare piece of land along Bali-Jalingo Road which was earmarked as the Polytechnic’s permanent site.

Established in 1977, the Federal Polytechnic Bida was a product of the decision of the Federal Government of Nigeria to move to the Federal College of Technology, Kano to Bida.

As a result, what is today known as the Federal Polytechnic, Bida was initially called the Bida College of Technology. The College of Technology would later become a Federal Polytechnic in 1979.

There were 211 pioneer student and 44 staff when the school’s first academic session resumed in 1978.

The Polytechnic is located on its permanent site along the Bida Doko Road.

Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro was established in July 1979 and its first academic session began November of the same year.

The Federal Polytechnic, Ile-Oluji is one of the latest Polytechnics in the country. The Polytechnic was established the Federal Government of Nigeria in 2014.

#12 Federal Polytechnic Mubi

The Federal Polytechnic, Mubi was one of the seven Federal Polytechnics established by Decree No. 33 of 1979. The Polytechnic took off in August of the same year.

The institution was initially known as the Federal Polytechnic, Yola but was relocated by the Federal Government in October 1982. However, the centre at Yola serves as a Consultancy Services Unit.

When the Polytechnic moved to Mubi, the institution inherited the building of the defunct Federal School of Arts and Sciences.

The 138 pioneer students that were admitted into the Polytechnic were enrolled in the Diploma Programmes of the following departments; Agricultural Technology, Food and Chemical Technology,

Instrumentation and Analysis, Hotel and Catering Management, Land Surveying, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Secretarial Studies and Business Administration and Management.

The Polytechnic would later introduce the National Certificate in Education (NCE) in 1982.

Over the years, the departments have grown to 17 with a student enrolment of over 14000.

The Polytechnic offers programs which include Higher National Diploma, National Diploma, Diploma and Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) degree program. The school also has a Center for Entrepreneurship Education.

Located in Nekede, Imo State, this Federal Polytechnic was established with the mission to train of students and professionals in technical and professional skills that will make them become not only
self-employable graduates, but also job creators.

Other objectives of the Polytechnic include:

  1. Providing studies, training, research and the development of techniques in the applied arts and sciences, technology, management, commerce and other fields of learning.
  2. Providing courses of instruction (full-time as well as part-time) leading to diplomas, certificates and other qualifications and distinction in scientific, technological, vocational, managerial professional and other spheres of learning.

The origin of the Federal Polytechnic Oko can be traced to 1979 when the Anambra State Government approved the establishment of the College of Arts and Science.

This was later upgraded to College of Arts, Science and Technology. However, in 1985, an Edict of the Anambra State Government formalized the status of the College as a Polytechnic and it became Anambra State Polytechnic, Oko.

In 1993, the State Polytechnic was taken over by the Federal Government after which it was renamed the Federal Polytechnic, Oko.

The Polytechnic has 3 campuses which include the Oko main campus, the Ufuma campus and the Atani campus.

Located in Kazaure in Jigawa State, the Hussaini Adamu Federal Polytechnic (HAFEDPOLY) is located in Kazaure in Jigawa State.

The Polytechnic was established in December 1991. It was initially called Jigawa State Polytechnic with four colleges in different locations. These include:

  • College of Engineering, Science and Technology at Kazaure,
  • College of Business and Management Studies at Dutse,
  • College of Islamic and Legal Studies at Ringim
  • College of Agriculture at Hadejia.

In 1998, the College was renamed Hussaini Adamu Polytechnic in honor of the former Emir of Kazaure, Alhaji Hussaini Adamu.

The Polytechnic became a Federal Polytechnic in January 2007.

Kaduna Polytechnic was established in 1956 as Kaduna Technical Institute after the British Government approved the upgrade of Yaba Higher College (now Yaba College of Technology) to a technical institute

and also proposed the establishment of technical institutes in Kaduna and Enugu.

The Federal Government announced the establishment of the National Institute of Construction Technology, Uromi in 2013.

The Institute was set up to provide Nigerian Youths with an opportunity for skills acquisition as well as vocational education and training in the construction industry.

The permanent site of the Institute was donated by Chief Tony Anenih. He donated the Nova Hotels with all the facilities at Uromi freely at no cost to the Federal Government.

Waziri Umaru Federal Polytechnic, Birnin Kebbi is one of the second generation Polytechnics in Nigeria that was involved in establishing 1976 as a College of Technology by the Sokoto State Government at that time.

The College took off in October 1976 at the Government Technical College, Farfaru Sokoto with 3 classrooms, 1 laboratory, 3 offices and a staff room.

In 1978, the College relocated to its temporary site after acquiring some structures from the Local Government Education Authority (LGEA) and a large expanse of land for its permanent site.

In 1980, the institution became a Polytechnic and was initially named, “The Polytechnic of Sokoto State.” However, following the creation of Kebbi State from the old Sokoto State, the school was renamed “The Polytechnic, Birnin Kebbi.

The Polytechnic’s current name was in honour of late Wazirin Gwandu, Alhaji Umaru Nassarawa.

In 2006, the Government of Kebbi State agreed to transfer the ownership of the Polytechnic to the Federal Government of Nigeria hence making the Polytechnic a Federal Tertiary Institution.

The student enrolment of the institution is made up of over 7,000 students with about 5,000 enrolled into programmes under the supervision of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE).

List Of Courses Offered By Waziri Umaru Federal Polytechnic


Yaba College of Technology (YCT) was established in 1947 as the successor of the defunct Yaba Higher College.

The college became autonomous in 1969 when the Decree 23 granted it the mandate to provide full time and part-time courses of instruction and training in:

  • Technology,
  • Applied science,
  • Commerce and Management as well as other relevant fields

YCT has 8 schools and 34 academic departments as well as 64 accredited programmes which include certificate courses, ND, HND and Post-HND levels.

Yaba College of Technology is said to be the first higher institution in Nigeria to establish a full-fledged centre for Entrepreneurship Development, with strong linkages with the world of commerce and industry.

The centre offers compulsory courses which must be taken by all students throughout their stay in the college.

Also, the college has a second campus at Epe. The campus is presently home to the Department of Agricultural Technology and Michael Otedola Information and Communication Centre.

Established in 1973, the Petroleum Training Institute (P.T.I.) in Effurun, Delta State was established by the Federal Government of Nigeria based on the requirement by the Organization of Petroleum

Exporting Countries (OPEC) to train indigenous middle-level manpower in order to meet the labour force demands of the oil and gas industry in Nigeria and the West African subregion.
